Salome II

Ron designed Salome for the One Ton Cup series in Denmark's Kattegat. This was the One Ton Cup - the first Level Rating Regatta for yacht that rated no more than 27.5 feet. The concept sent to designers all over the world rushing to their drawing boards - Ron included. He produced another double-ended, Salome with a large mainsail for the light winds in Denmark's Kattegat, where the next One Ton Cup series was to be held.

The MHYC took the venture to heart and feted the crew of Ron Swanson (owner/skipper), Doug Gilling (Navigator), Leo Reilly, Laurie Mitchell and Dave Linton. Salome was on her way to represent the club for the first time in the One Ton Cup.

Ron did not make feathers fly on the waters of the Kattegat, but when Salome came back, Ron re-rigged her for Australian conditions and went on to second place in the next 1966 Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race.

Wally Ward designs and the CA's - Southern Woodenboat Sailing

Following Wally's death, Ron modified CADENCE slightly to produce the 33ft SALOME which he took to the One Ton Cup in Europe. When she returned to Australia, she came 2nd in the Hobart race. Sisterships

SARLENA and SARNIA followed to the same design.

Hey Julie, I sailed to Hobart on Salome with Keith Pix in 1969, I was 15 year old, (an unofficial crew), I've been at sea professionally since and if you find her, I would be more than happy to be involved in taking her to Hobart and back again.

Note:

Keiths son Greg had a tragic bucks party accident costing him an eye, leaving Keith Pix short of crew, so young Steve from over the road at Balmoral Beach was commandeered. At the time I was a regular on Bob Phipps' Marsude plus doing regular winter series and Friday races on Salome.

The next year Bob Phipps said we were all too young to take Marsude to Hobart (majority of the crew were 15 or 16yo) so we went on a jaunt to Lorde Howe instead, (through cyclone Aida 1970-71).

Since then I've done numerous deliveries to and from Hobary plus 150,000 nautical miles, but never an official Hobart race.
